Alex. Health & Fitness Disclaimer

Version 1.0 · Last updated: 30 September 2026

Please read this before you start training or change your diet with Alex. You will be asked to confirm you have read it, and to complete a short health screening, before you can use training and nutrition features. It forms part of our Terms of Service.

This disclaimer is here to inform you and keep you safe. It does not remove our responsibility for our own negligence, and nothing in it limits your legal rights.

Part A: Important health information

A1. Alex is not medical advice. Alex gives general fitness, training, nutrition, sleep and recovery coaching for generally healthy adults. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, prevent, monitor or manage any disease, injury or medical condition, and it is not a substitute for advice from your GP, a physiotherapist, a registered dietitian or another qualified health professional. Never ignore professional medical advice, or delay seeking it, because of something Alex says.

A2. What Alex is for (intended purpose). Alex is a general wellness and lifestyle service. It is intended to help healthy adults plan exercise, eat well, sleep and recover, and track their progress. It is not intended for any medical purpose, and it is not a medical device. It must not be used for managing a medical condition, including diabetes, heart disease, eating disorders, pregnancy complications, injuries or rehabilitation.

A3. The coach is an AI. Most coaching in Alex is generated by an artificial intelligence system. It follows our safety rules, but it can make mistakes, it cannot examine you, and it only knows what you tell it. Use your own judgement. If a suggestion feels wrong, painful or unsafe, don't do it.

A4. Exercise and diet changes carry inherent risks. Even when programmes are designed carefully, physical activity carries some risks that cannot be fully removed. These include muscle soreness, strains and sprains, joint and back injuries, falls, dizziness and fainting, and, rarely, heart problems (including heart attack or sudden cardiac death), especially in people with undiagnosed conditions. Changing what or how much you eat can affect your energy, mood, blood sugar and wellbeing. By choosing to train and follow nutrition suggestions, you accept these inherent risks. You do not accept any risk caused by our negligence. We remain responsible for that as set out in our Terms.

A5. Stop and get help if you feel unwell. Stop exercising straight away and seek medical help if you have chest pain, pressure or tightness, severe or unusual breathlessness, palpitations or an irregular heartbeat, dizziness or fainting, a sudden severe headache, confusion, or sudden pain or swelling in a joint or muscle. In an emergency, call 999. For urgent advice, call NHS 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk. If you tell the coach about any of these symptoms, it will stop coaching and direct you to medical help. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, call Samaritans on 116 123 or 999.

A6. Check with a health professional before you start if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, diabetes or another long-term condition; you take prescribed medication for a long-term condition; you are pregnant or have given birth in the last 12 months; you have a bone, joint or soft-tissue problem that could be made worse by exercise; you have been told to exercise only under medical supervision; or you are over 45 and not used to vigorous exercise.

A7. Eating and body image. Alex is not suitable if you have, or are recovering from, an eating disorder, unless your treating clinician agrees and you use Alex with calorie targets, weigh-in prompts and weight goals switched off. If you are worried about your eating, contact Beat (www.beateatingdisorders.org.uk; helpline 0808 801 0677) or your GP.

Alex's safety limits for nutrition:

  • →Alex will not set a daily calorie target below 1,200 kcal for women or 1,500 kcal for men, and will never suggest eating fewer than 800 kcal a day.
  • →Alex will not plan weight loss faster than about 0.5–1 kg (1–2 lb) a week.
  • →Alex will not set a weight-loss goal if your details give a body mass index (BMI) below 18.5, or if you have told us you are pregnant or have an eating disorder.
  • →Alex does not give advice on medication, and does not recommend doses of supplements beyond general, food-first information.

A8. Glucose monitors. If you connect a Dexcom or FreeStyle Libre glucose monitor, readings in Alex are for general insight into how food, training and sleep relate to your glucose. Alex does not provide glucose alarms or alerts and is not for managing diabetes, hypoglycaemia or any other condition. Never use Alex to decide on insulin, medication or treatment. Readings in Alex may be delayed, incomplete or missing. Always rely on your monitor's own app and alerts and on your healthcare team.

A9. Wearable data. Heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep and similar data from wearables are estimates and can be inaccurate. Alex uses them only to adjust general training and recovery suggestions, not to detect or monitor health problems. If you are worried about a reading, speak to a health professional.

A10. Your personal trainer. If you work with a personal trainer through Alex, they are an independent professional and are responsible for their own advice and supervision. Tell them about any relevant health issues too. Your trainer cannot see your screening answers unless you tell them.

A11. Results vary. We don't promise any particular result. Progress depends on many things outside our control, including your genetics, health, sleep, stress and consistency.

Part B: Health screening and how it affects your plan

B1. When we screen. You'll answer a short health questionnaire before you can use training or nutrition features. We ask again every 12 months and whenever you tell us your health has changed. Please answer honestly and update your answers in Settings → Health → Update screening if anything changes.

B2. The questions. These are our own questions, based on widely used pre-exercise screening themes:

1. Has a doctor ever said you have a heart condition or high blood pressure? 2. Do you feel pain in your chest at rest, during daily activities, or when you do physical activity? 3. In the last 12 months, have you lost your balance because of dizziness, or lost consciousness? 4. Have you been diagnosed with another long-term medical condition (other than heart disease or high blood pressure)? 5. Are you currently taking prescribed medication for a long-term medical condition? 6. Do you currently have, or have you had in the last 12 months, a bone, joint or soft-tissue problem that could be made worse by becoming more physically active? 7. Has a doctor ever said you should only do medically supervised physical activity? 8. Are you pregnant, or have you given birth in the last 12 months? 9. Have you ever been diagnosed with, or are you being treated for, an eating disorder? 10. Are you currently unwell with a temporary illness, such as a cold or fever?

B3. What happens with your answers.

B4. Asking for a person to review a decision. These decisions are made automatically from your answers. If you think one is wrong, you can ask for a person to review it by emailing hello@getalex.app (subject "Screening review") or through Help → Contact us. We may ask for confirmation from a health professional. We will respond within one month.

B5. Your health data. Your screening answers are health data. We process them only with your explicit consent, to keep you safe and tailor your coaching, as explained in our Privacy Policy. After your account closes we keep a limited safety record (your answers, the outcome, and when you accepted this disclaimer) for 3 years, only in case of legal claims. If you withdraw consent, we can't provide personalised training or nutrition coaching.

Part C: Your acknowledgement

At onboarding we ask you to tick this box. We record the date, time and version you accepted.

> ☐ I have read the Health & Fitness Disclaimer. I understand that Alex is AI-generated general fitness and nutrition coaching, not medical advice, and not for managing any medical condition. I understand that exercise and diet changes carry inherent risks. I will answer the health screening honestly and keep it up to date. I will stop and seek medical help if I feel unwell. I understand that nothing in this acknowledgement removes Alex's responsibility for its own negligence.

Before high-intensity sessions, the app shows:

> This session is hard. Warm up, go at your own pace and stop if you feel chest pain, dizziness or unusual breathlessness. In an emergency call 999.
